Dr. Emmett Powers
The Rev. Dr. Emmett Powers, our minister, was
born and reared in the Memphis area. He graduated from Ouachita Baptist
University (B. A. in Religion) , in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Southern Seminary
(M. Div.) in Louisville, Kentucky, and completed a Doctor of Ministry at
Golden Gate Seminary, in San Francisco, California, in 1991, receiving the
Outstanding Doctoral Student Scholarship. He has served churches in Arkansas,
Indiana and Florida. As a volunteer in missions he served in Costa Rica and
Argentina.
For several years he ministered in Denver,
Colorado, as a church strategist, resourcing Anglo and Ethnic new church
developments. In 1992, and 1993, he developed a prototype program for inner
city churches called "Key Church". The program helped inner city churches to
redevelop resources to embrace many different ministries within its
community. Then, later in 1993, Emmett and Ginny "came
home" to Arkansas where God began a new spiritual direction in their lives.
They began attending First Presbyterian Church in Batesville. "We were drawn
to the historical and covenantal nature of the Presbyterian Church and to the
commitment to a connectional (and I believe scriptural) way of church order,"
he commented.
His interest in preaching informed and thoughtful sermons, his love
for people, and his spiritual devotion help us grow in our Christian lives. He
has been a member of the Presbytery of Arkansas since May, 2002, when he
became the pastor of our church.
His personal interests are in wooden boat
building, writing local history, backpacking, and sailing.
Virginia, "Ginny", his wife, was born in
Washington, D. C. She is a portrait and religious artist working in her
private studio. She also owns and cares for a Christian small-group retreat
center, Christmeadow, in the Ozark foothills.
They have two children, Justin and Rachel,
who are college students.
